About LISTEN TO ME:

In New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Proby’s brand new series, five best friends open a hot new restaurant, but one of them gets much more than she bargained for when a sexy former rock star walks through the doors—and into her heart.

Seduction is quickly becoming the hottest new restaurant in Portland, and Addison Wade is proud to claim 1/5 of the credit. She’s determined to make it a success and can’t think of a better way to bring in new customers than live music. But when former rock star Jake Keller swaggers through the doors to apply for the weekend gig, she knows she’s in trouble. Addie instantly recognizes him—his posters were plastered all over her bedroom walls in high school—he’s all bad boy...exactly her type and exactly what she doesn’t need.

Jake Keller walked away from the limelight five years ago and yearns to return to what’s always driven him: the music. If he gets to work for a smart-mouthed, funny-as-hell bombshell, all the better. But talking Addie into giving him the job is far easier than persuading her that he wants more than a romp in her bed. Just when she begins to drop her walls, Jake’s past finally catches up with him.

Will Addie be torn apart once again or will Jake be able to convince her to drown out her doubts and listen to her heart?

Review:

Thank you to the publisher and InkSlinger PR for giving me the opportunity to read an eARC of Listen to Me by Kristen Proby via Edelweiss.

You could say that I was surprised when I first started reading Listen to Me by Kristen Proby because I learned that the heroine was already in a relationship. Say what? And it turns out that her closest friends strongly disliked her current bae. So, you know I was like "What is going on??!!!" If your girls hate your man, then the man has GOT TO GO. So, I was surprised by how strongly Addie was defending Jeremy to her friends. Luckily for us readers, Jeremy shows his true colors quickly and Addie thankfully comes to her senses and dumps him, which leaves her open to flirt with the seriously yummy Jake Keller--the true hero of this story.

Before reading Listen to Me, it had been a long time since I had read a book with a rock star hero, and I have to say that Jake Keller made for the perfect re-entry into this world. Although, what I truly appreciate about this story was that it does not revolve around "rock star land." After an unfortunate situation, Jake had to reevaluate his life and decided to quit the band and remove himself from the limelight entirely. Instead, he works on music behind the scenes with his own studio. So, I liked that we only heard about the Jake who drank a little too much and slept with his fair share of women in passing. I liked that the here and now Jake was sweet and kind but still incredibly sexy. Jake was perfect for Addie. You always have to love a guy that can show a woman that not ALL guys (or in this case not ALL musicians) are bad. It helped that he had a best friend like Christina to kick him in the butt when he was being stupid. Ultimately, he respected Addie and allowed her to be vulnerable so he gets endless high fives from me!

Now, Addie--once you look past her Jeremy mishap--is a really strong heroine. She's feisty, smart, and genuinely caring of others. I think part of the reason she is so strong is because she surrounds herself with some pretty kickass ladies. I mean, seriously, can I join the club? Addie and her four closest girlfriends own a pretty spectacular restaurant, and they run it like the intelligent women they are. I really love the idea of five independent females creating a business together while still maintaining a powerful and meaningful friendship. Seriously, I have girl crushes on all of them, and I'm really looking forward to reading all of their stories--especially the next story, which will be Cami and Landon's. I'm such a sucker for the "loving my best friend's brother" trope.

Overall, Addie and Jake are perfect together (the chemistry is electric and their relationship progresses so smoothly with trust and tenderness), and I can't wait to see more of them in the coming books. Sometimes, you just want a read that's a little more light, a little more fun, a whole lot sexy, and Listen to Me is definitely that. As long as you don't mind the fairly frequent use of the F-word, you (presumably a romance reader) should eat this book up in no time!

Excerpt:

A man walks onto the stage and sits on the stool, strums his guitar. The MC didn’t announce his name.

The singer is wearing a black T-shirt and jeans. No shoes. A hat is pulled down his forehead, shadowing his face.

But I’d recognize those tattoos anywhere.

“Oh my God, I think that’s Jake Knox,” I whisper to Kat in disbelief.

“The tattoos,” she breathes and I roll my eyes. “God, I used to be in love with him. I had his posters on my walls when I was in high school.”

“Most did,” I reply and watch as his fingers play the strings on his guitar as if he’s making love to a woman. “God, he can play.”

“What’s he doing at an open-mic night?” Kat turns wide eyes to me. “Does he live here?”

I nod. “Yeah, I heard somewhere that he lives nearby. Maybe he needs an ego boost?”

But then he begins to sing a familiar Lifehouse song, and my chest tightens. I love this song. I love his voice. It’s raw and rich and just a little bit raspy. It’s pure sex.

“He’d be absolutely perfect.” Kat’s voice is a whisper. She probably didn’t mean to say it out loud.

“I know we can’t afford him. He probably plays at celebrity weddings and shit.”

Jake glances up, showing his face and those amazing green eyes for the first time, and aims them right at me. He sings at least five lines, holding my gaze, then winks and lowers his head again.

Arrogant.

“Speaking of egos,” I murmur. “That would be a hot mess.”

“A sexy-as-fuck hot mess,” Kat replies. “God, look at the way his muscles bunch as he plays.”

Trust me, I noticed. You’d have to be blind with an IQ of minus 20 to not notice the way Jake Knox moves. He makes everything in me come awake. Which makes sense because he’s probably been trained to do that. He has to sell music, after all.
